Definition

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding assistant that runs directly in the terminal. It operates through tools (Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Glob, Grep, and more), maintains a conversation, reads codebases, writes and modifies files, runs commands, and coordinates subagents. It is configured through CLAUDE.md files loaded at session start and through hooks wired in settings files that fire at lifecycle points, giving developers a programmatic layer to observe, enforce, and extend its behavior.
